The computer reads your pulse rate via the sensors on the handle bars, and adjusts the resistance automatically based on how fast your heart is beating - if it's too fast it will reduce the resistance and if it's too slow it will increase the resistance.
Console
The console displays and monitors time, distance, speed and calories.
